Top Survival Items: Emergency Fire Starter

by irtiza104 on June 7, 2011

Emergency Fire Starter is not just a survival tool, it is something that campers and hikers will love. You may love or hate this particular product but when you are thinking about going on a hike or camping, you must bring some sort of fire starters with you, won’t you agree?

In this post I am going to compare two different emergency fire starters and let you decide which one is “The One” for you. The top survival items that I am going to talk about are:

What I liked about these Emergency Fire Starters

Both Genuine Issue Magnesium Survival Firestarter and Emergency Fire Starter by SE work fine. Both of these top survival items work perfectly fine as described and were able to light up tinder such as dry moss, cotton, dried grass and paper without a problem.

The shape of these two fire starters are almost identical, the SE Fire Starter being a few millimeters longer. Even though I like the look of both of them, I prefer SE Emergency Fire Starter as it looks more raw and I love the darker coating. I think Man vs Wild Bear Grylls uses one like the SE Fire Starter.

The performance seemed to be identical, and good.

Both of them are easy to use. To make fire with these top survival tools, hold it steady and scrape sparks from flint. You could apply steady pressure while scraping the flint. Hold the bar a little above (45 degree angle) the tinder so that the stroke does not scatter the tinder below. After a little practice I am sure you will get a hang of this.

What I didn’t like about neither of these Emergency Fire Starters

The instructions about how to light a fire with these two fire starters say that, holding the blade perpendicular to the bar you should “strike” the flint. Let me give you a word of caution that the flint is brittle and a strike may result in a brake. So I’d advice you to do a quick full length while trying to light a fire with these emergency fire starters.

The price difference is something which bothered me. Even though Emergency Fire Starter by SE and Genuine Issue Magnesium Survival Firestarter are almost identical in nature and looks, the later one costs almost double of the SE fire starter (you can get them at a discount though). Maybe the reason behind this is that SE Fire Starter is made is China and the other one in USA.

The final verdict is yours. Which one do you prefer? Or have you tried any of these yet? I would really like to know about your experience with these fire starters. Anyway, make sure you get at-least one Emergency Fire Starter in your backpack, next time you go hiking or camping.

Happy trails!
